Try something different – canoe your way through Thames!

Looking for something really different to do in London? Why not try a canoe trip along the Thames? It makes a fantastic way to see London from a very different perspective.

The River Thames has been the lifeblood of London for centuries. Vessels of all kinds, large and small have taken people and goods up and down the Thames.  Nowadays most visitors wanting to explore the river take one of the many cruise boats or use the hop on hop off Thames Clipper connecting central London with Greenwich.

Far fewer opt for canoes! Yet this can offer some really amazing views of historic buildings like the Houses of Parliament, the Tower of London and the wharves of London’s docklands.

Canoeing your way along the river is becoming more popular – but it is best attempted as part of a special guided tour as the River Thames is a very powerful river. A tidal river, there can be a massive difference of up to seven metres – 23 feet – at high and low tides. The Thames can also be quite fast if you get caught in the current, as the tide can flow at up to five miles an hour.  The added hazard of choppy waves caused by passing boats also has to be taken into account.

If you are staying at any holiday apartments in Covent Garden, the best way to discover the Thames by canoe is to book a tour led by specialist companies like Secret Adventures creating what has to be one of the most stunning and memorable activities available to visitors to London – and you don’t have to be a skilled canoeist to enjoy it. The tours are open to total novices.

Each tour is carefully timed to coincide with the falling tide, making it much easier to paddle. Using stable double kayaks with rudders, the canoe trip takes three hours to travel between Battersea and the Old Naval College in Greenwich, close to a DLR station.  You can even sometimes take an evening paddle to enjoy the sun setting over London as you paddle past the looming sides of HMS Belfast, under Tower Bridge and down to Greenwich.

This is definitely London with a difference, a memorable journey that will bring the city vividly to life during your stay at any of the aparthotels in London.
